Suspensions

Chicago Dispatch tells us that numerous suspensions are forthcoming and as soon as the end of this month or next month. Well, well like that isn't a surprise! Another reason why our management is so screwed up. Reason why I say that is because half of these suspensions come from CI's that were researched, reviewed by our "Complaint Section." They were unfounded and then passed to management where they were "reopened", overuled and the days were slapped on 'em! Now that is just wrong! Why even have a team of employees investigating CI's? What a big slap in the face to them! It's like saying they have no say, no brain to make a good judgement. Most importantly, what happened to the process we read about years ago. Somebody has to have that order. It was a program implemented to help the employee that received a CI understand their mistake and help them understand policy so that it doesn't happen again and turn into suspension days. This is OEMC's problem, they are so quick to stick it to their employees, the employees they say are doing such a great job. Want to thank us for the great job we are doing , how bout stand behind us for once, just once instead of messing with people's money, lives and job!

Years ago the police departments across the country revamped their way of taking complaints from citizen to weed out the extremely high number of bogus complaints. Both the police department and the OEMC share a common burden of having to filter and eventually service calls that have no business EVER being handled by the police.

So when we have to break the bad news to Paris Hilton's sorority sister who was soooo gutter drunk the night before and was passed around like a blunt at a Grateful Dead concert, that because the dry cleaner was unable to remove some love stains from her favorite hoochie outfit, she is not entitled to police service because it's a civil matter. What usually follows is a formal complaint to a supervisor DEMANDING a complaint number against the call taker because the charm school valedictorian was told NO for the first time since her whining pleas for a pony on her 7th birthday.

For the most part, our current group of supervisors tell these cry babies the fact of life, and send them on their way. The old days of "just get a C.I. number and let investigations exonerate them later" have for stopped. Maybe it's because the last group of promotees remember what it was like to work on the ops floor. For whatever reason, let me just say that it is appreciated.

For those that don't know how the complaint process is done in some police departments, it is similar to ours with ONE VERY BIG DIFFERENCE. After making a formal complaint, before it can be processed the complainant MUST sign an affidavit attesting that the allegation is truthful. You would be surprised how much it weeds out those people that make bogus complaints for the mere fact that they didn't get their way.

I would love to see that done here at the OEMC and taken a step further. (hell, if the citizen's can have unreal expectations, why can't we) Before signing the affidavit, the complaint is warned that if the accused is exonerated of the complaint, AND if it is found through the course of the investigation that the complainant lied, they will be not only be charged with purgery, but also would be open for possible civil litigation from the accused.

Of course that would never work here at the OEMC. They can't afford to lose the money they make back from our suspensions !!!

Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Not even the Oec can stop me from suing in civil court for slander.
The citizen who gets a complaint on me better be mighty careful and accurate for I will not hestitate to go after them in the legal arena.

We should push for the complaint affidavit signing in this upcoming contract.

Hope you all don't take this the wrong way, but as the red headed step children of city government and OEMC, the Operators at the 311 Center sympathize with and share your issues. We thought it was only our group of managerial geniuses that found a way to discipline and suspend Operators for CIs that the Investigator ruled "unfounded". And blatant favoritism is shown to certain employees. And we could go on and on and on and on and on and on.....
