Uh oh

Oh no, Let's Talk read this morning in the Sun Times that our head honcho, AV is this close to working with the Gov. So what does this mean for us? Who is going to take his place? Will it be an outsider? Will it be someone from within? One can only hope that whoever it is he or she will be a good turn for us. We will be waiting and watching.

Dz fella is a decent guy if I have figured out the correct name. Very personable. I mean at least he will smile at you while giving you the shaft, as opposed to av who doesnt blink.

Who are DZ, RG and JA ? Give us a hint. I can't think of anyone with those initials.

    DOn, Rich, and Jimmy

Isn't Jimmy the only one of those three with any sort of dispatch experience? I thought I heard somewhere that he was a PCO2 once upon a time a LOOOOOONG while ago... 'course I could be wrong...wouldn't be the first time....

Yeah, Jimmy worked zone 1 for a period of time----wait, I forgot, my grandmother always told me "if you can't say something nice about a person you should keep your mouth shut."
Sorry, I'll just shut my mouth.

I never saw JA on z1 in old room!

I think JA is the only working person in mgt. Never have I sent him an email that he hasn't responded in a timely manner and with a solution, consistently. If he gets the gig, well I guess that would be wonderful for him, but we would lose a great resource and probably one of the few who listens and has a solution to our problems.

JA was definitely hired as a PCO II back in '94. He was in the first or second class. Nice guy. Hired supposedly because he used to work in one of the first computerized emergency centers in the country (I think it was in Tennessee).

Not sure how any of it qualifies him for the top management position. His role over the last 10 year has not really been managerial at all, and I'm not sure he's the guy you'd want making decisions for the city if the big one hits.

But then again, Funk and Bishop were about the only two ever in the top spot who arguably were qualified for their positions. Other than that, the top positions in Chicago have always been and will always be filled by poseurs.

JA would be the best choice, but rumor says he doesn't want it. He has been in management for over 10 years now, he makes sure our systems keep running (remember how often we used to go to cards?) and he actually activates new programs to HELP us do our jobs faster and easier plus he is the only one in the building who has a background in police/fire/ems/oem. When he came to Chicago he was in the first class at 11th/State. He worked the zone just like everyone else and gained the respect of all of us when we saw he understood what it takes to do it right. Come on guys, he is available 24/7 to EVERYONE. He treats everyone the same no matter where you rank on the ladder. Yeah, he may be a nice guy and all, but he is also more than qualified. If you don’t think so just stop by and talk with him some time.

"(remember how often we used to go to cards?)"

No offense, really, because I like the guy, but he was in a technical spot from before the building opened. Which is to say, if he was some sorta superhero, we wouldn't have had to go to cards so much back in '95 and '96.

Don't get me wrong, there was plenty of blame to go around for that. The police department for opening the building before it was ready. Any decision maker (Corbett et al.) responsible for overseeing implementation. Robinson, just for being so willing to throw people under a bus. And on and on and on.

But being around to fix problems for ten years ain't really perfect. Wouldn't it be better to say that the system was designed right from the beginning? Or fixed, say, in '95 or so?

No matter. The job should be for a big-picture disaster guy, not a technical guy who once worked in Tennessee and once worked zone (cough, cough) 1.

No offense. Like I said, I like the guy. Just not for AV's job anymore than I liked AV or Huberman for AV's job.

We have to remember back in 95-96’ the operating system was brand new and there was not (and still is not) another one like it in the world. So, a few struggles are to be expected during the infancy of a newly designed operating system. And yes, even a superhero has their limits (ha ha). As far as working the zones, how many folks who have been in that position have worked any of the zones or even taken a call for that matter here or anywhere else….none come to mind. My comment was only to say he has been out on the floor as a worker and not just an observer so he gets it when we, dispatchers/call takers ask for new system enhancements. I’m sure there are a lot of qualified folks out there but I’m just saying the guy has over 25 years of experience in a lot of areas is all. Perhaps some know more about him than others. I didn’t know him very well at all and here are a few things I found out about him when I stopped by his office one afternoon to ask a few questions that just so happened to open up a discussion to stuff he had done in his past. He was a Lieutenant/Paramedic for a fire department in KY, he was a Fire, EMS, EMT, Mass Casualty/Triage and Vehicle Extrication instructor, he was the Director of Disaster and Emergency Services (what OEM is now) for two of the largest counties in the state of KY and acted as a direct liaison with FEMA to coordinate all county wide disasters when they occurred and training drills, he is certified in airport crash firefighting/rescue and hazardous materials as well. He was responsible in KY and is also now responsible for securing federal funding to further enhance not only the functionality and the progression of the 9-1-1 operating system but OEM as well. So with that said, I think his experience reaches beyond just the “technical” realm and find it hard to believe he would not be considered is all. I bet if we thought about what all goes on around here, his name would surface in most everything. Hey, at least he seems to care about what’s going on around here and seems to be one of the few trying hard to keep this place moving forward. Time will tell shortly who the new guy will be, so we are left to only wait and see.

True, but you must have really cross-examined him to get all that information. Look at the detail you provided us about his career. Seems quite extensive for a chance meeting. Did you do a colo-rectal also?
