Do we have to?

Here is a very interesting topic, callbacks! Do we really have to callback the citizen? I mean really if you call the police you should be waiting out in front, looking out the window, or you would think. I recall two incidents in which I thought to myself there really should be no callbacks. One incident takes me back to the old room in which a woman had called police because she said she had been burglarized. Ok bt XXXX gets there and no Mrs. Doe, I call back and Mrs. Doe answers the phone after 10 rings. I ask Mrs. Doe if she called the police and she tells me, "Oh are they here, I jumped in the shower?" Hello!!!!!!!!!!!!! The second incident takes me back just months ago when bt XXXX asks for a callback for a domestic. I call back Mr Doe and ask him if he has called the police. Mr Doe tells me , "yes I did and i was wondering when they were going to get out of their car down the street to come see me." Hmmm , so lets's hear from both sides, should we or shouldn't we make those callbacks?

I agree with you, if you call the police then you should be watching.
I also think call backs are necessary sometimes, like when we get a person stabbed at fulerton and it turns out it was fulton. So sometimes yes, sometimes no. Maybe call backs should be determined by priorty class. 1A yes, 2C not worth the trouble.

Again, another important topic. When you think about it, it's sad that such important subject(s) are discussed in a blog format. So many great ideas have been written on these (5) blogs. Does anyone with power read these suggestions or the media? I know we have a site on CPD's intranet whereby one can make suggestions. Still, no tracking number is given so one doesn't know what downtown thought of the idea or they have no way to get back to the writer.

Sorry getting off topic here, the Department has made some great improvements over the years, compared to what we had, still, there is so much waste and mismanagement of manpower and equipment,it overshadows the good.

But getting back to the callback issue, maybe from the get go the dispatcher could include that in the job, like he or she could say, "Man down, there is no CB, handle accordingly", or "Man Down, NCB".

Ok, take care, God Bless and you're all doing a great job. Happy New Year.

What happened to the other Police blogs being counted in? I thought there were more like 6 or 7.
What (5) blogs are you talking about?
    SCC,
    Dispatcher #1,
    Scc Sgt.,
    SCC Detective,
    this site #2 chi-dispatch
    that's (5)then there is
Honorablestar and Canine cop blogs (7)
Whose being counted in your number and reference? I'm confused, thought we supported all chg. officers and their blogs? Scratching my head on your reference of 5. Maybe you didn't know they existed but Canine was linked with 1st dispatcher blog and honorablestar was linked thru SCC Dicks. Thought you would like to know there are (7) not (5). Just like this newer blog being 1 of 2 dispatcher blogs, there is also now (3) po blogs (1) Det. and (1) Sgt. Didn't know which of these you were referring to. I visit and support all of them as a genuine show of unity and support.
Also, I think (they) the boss's do read all blogs but dont pay attention to the points on any of the postings.

If the caller ordered a pizza they'd have the light on and be watching for the delivery guy. So no call backs!

Hmmmmm callbacks? I have mixed opinion on this topic.

There are some cops out there who ask for callbacks on EVERYTHING, just because they pulled around the corner and no one came running up to the squad car. Some of those same cops are also lazy and don't exit the car to actually knock on the door. They are also the same ones who ask for a callback AFTER the dispatcher has SPECIFICALLY announced over the air that the call is ANONYMOUS. Hey Nimrod, that means = there's no phone # to call back!

Then there are those officers that knock on the door, the windows, go around to the back, go around to the alley, and THEN ask for a callback. As a dispatcher, these are the officers that I prefer. Actually doing a little police work.

As for the callbacks.... I'm sorry but I am NOT calling back on a parker, or a car accident, or any other low priority job. Use some common sense when asking for a callback. If you don't see a 4 car accident as described in the remarks section of the event, then feel free to "Handle Accordingly". 18 Boy works for me!

For higher priority jobs, I feel callbacks should be done. For domestics, Persons with guns, Batteries, etc. All it will take will be one occassion when a callback ISN'T done, and someone gets killed at a domestic or something. When the whole thing ends up in court, the tapes are played, it will be brought out that the police officer asked for a callback, and one was never done, and poor Jane Doe got killed. Obviously, just because a callback is done, doesnt mean she will even answer the call or be able to answer the door, BUT at least they can never say that the dispatcher fucked up and didnt do his/her job!!

I'd also like to add - that I also agree with the original post in that : IF you call for the police - You should be watching for them!! If you jump in the shower, then I guess it really wasnt that impt. in the first place, was it??

I dont agree w doing callbacks for any reason. There is nothing in writing which compels dispatchers to do them and they were almost never done in the old room (ask the old timers). CPD would handle their jobs and take responsibility for them as it should be. The dispatcher who do callbacks are now actually becoming a part of the chain of investigation--thats cpds role. The callback drama has become another way of passing the buck and assigning ultimate responsiblity for job disposition AWAY from CPD and back to OEMC. Dispatcher should not fall for it because everyone knows that when the crap goes down and its found that a dispatcher waved off CPD as a result of a callback the OEMC is going to be on the hook. Think about it.
