Paging the training department

Attention everyone, this is just a suggestion, not meant at all to point fingers or start bashing certain people. Can we bring back short, one hour, during the tour training sessions for our employees? Example, there are many dispatchers who may not know about all of the commands, or have forgotten what certain commands can do. Some calltakers can be reminded that they probably shouldn't tell the caller that the police have already been dispatched. Dispatchers may have forgotten what to do in the event of an svip. Calltakers may have forgotten that when making out a ticket, "calling again" "checking eta" or "dup" is not appropriate information to put in the remarks section. The 2nd watch was told yesterday in roll call that calltakers are not to include "fire refused" in our tickets. If fire will not be responding, "fire not responding " should be entered. What about dispatcher callbacks? Is anyone ever going to come up with an sop on this? Roll call training is sometimes used for just that but we need more than that. If we are expected to follow a certain procdure then it should be on paper and done the same across the board. So with that all said, can we get the training department to conduct some training sessions maybe bout an hour or so long?

Where have you been??? The Training Department is currently giving one hour in-service training classes. You do make a good point, and these in-service classes should continue.

i never knew about in service training classes or refresher classes. so if they do it they should post it somewhere cuz i would definately take them up on it. especially for some of the quick commands that i don't remember exist.

Anyone who listens and doesn't put in the ticket that fire is refusing to go when the person specifically asked for an ambulance is stupid.

There are no such things are refresher courses. Whoever thinks that there are is mistaken. And I've inquired directly from a trainer so don't even think about questioning me. They have been talking about them for a while but they don't exist. That would be a great idea though because calltakers are still making abandoned building disturbances criminal tresspass in progress jobs. Dispatchers are still stacking jobs during change time (bad idea), and supervisors are afraid of correcting said problems. Every single time a new event type or command is created, copies should be printed out and sent to every single 3rd floor employee so that everyone is aware. The training department is a joke, but lets not blame the trainers. Their superiors should have enough common sence to think of ideas like these. But guess what? They don't. This whole thing about fire refusing to respond is idiotic. Who said we can't write
"fire refused" on the ticket? It's not in any SOP or general order that I've ever read. Calltakers, if they refuse I suggest you put that in the remarks section. Not just "fire not responding". what a crock of shit. Cover your asses at all times and don't listen to what certain "unqualified" supervisors and watch managers tell you because you WILL GET SCREWED! Remember, when the 4th floor comes down on you "they" won't cover your ass and tell them what they told you to do! "They" will misteriously say that they don't remember saying what they said at rollcall.

I must be daft. I don't see the difference between fire refused and fire not responding. Either way they are not going. What's the big deal????

i don't know if this is right or not...but if you put fire refused in the ticket..it may seem like the caller refused fire, not that fire is not responding.....but that's just my take on the whole thing.

Ummm, how about, "Fire refused to go." That spells it out completely, doesn't it?

how about everything is on the fucking tape

26 June, 2008 18:40, completely right!! If anything were to come of it, the tape tells all!!

i dont care about the tape..what if it becomes a court case and whoops the tape is accidentally destroyed and fire tries to blame it on the police call taker. if fire refuses to go..you should put that in the ticket. BOTTOM LINE!

I had a situation where a sgt on the street requested fire and they refused to respond. This is bs because I believe if a sgt - lt - capt or even a bt cop asks for fire they should respond. After all, we do have to respond with the amb for any reason they deem necessary - man having a seizure on the street - why in the world do they need an assist on that??

Hey now .... Don't pick on all fire personnel. Yes there are some complete morons and stupidity runs amok with alot of them, but c'mon!! There's some good people over there who know how to do the job and do it well. As for the nitwit(s) who refuses to send fire when a Zone requests, well that should be brought up to your supervisor and get a number on em. Note the ticket fire refused, fire not going, but also note on the ticket what the caller said. A sliver in the finger, sprained ankle from 3days ago or I got beat up 2wks ago is not a 'life threatening emergency' protocol says advise alternate transportation. Nuff said.

Police side and the fire side are as close to each other geographically as two city lots, but they are as far apart and different as America and Australia. Customs and processes are all different. And their common language, even though both sides speak English, is spoken differently and has different meanings and innuendos. It's like the regular world and the bizarro world, Superman!

The request from the sgt for fire and they refused ... I'm guessing it was the goofball PJ on fire, that dingbat blonde ... she refuses EVERYTHING!!

this post won't be fire-bashing, it will be police-side training staff-bashing. we cant have an hour long refresher course because that would interrupt the training staff's 8hr long lunch break. MOOOOOOOOOOOOO

As the supervisor of training I am more than happy to put down my sandwiches and give refresher courses. We can do them at anyone's request and have in the past. At times though we are given other tasks and need to prioritize. We have recently started a bulletin so please let me know what you would like covered and I will see that it is addressed. However, if your unsure as to what we do on a daily basis you should come and see me in my office, room 329 or call me at 312-746-9258 and I will be more than happy to speak with you on our duties which include many different things such as teaching at the Police Academy for PPO's, PO's, Detectives, Sgt's and Lt's. We are also involved in community service, community awareness, orientation for all new OEMC hires and of course teaching PCO I and PCO II new hires. If your unhappy with the way the training dept is doing things, again stop by and I'd love to hear new suggestions. My door is always open and I'm never anonymous.
    Respectfully,
    Carla Orlandini
