Watch Manager on 3rd watch says he's going to do a little moving around on the zones. Seems some people have gotten a bit to comfortable on some zones. Might want to give some thought to the CW's too.

Let's just hope the new PCO2s realize that call taking IS a part of their job description, and if they are assigned to answer calls one day instead of being on a zone, they have no right to BITCH about it!

Is that code for "the new alderman have made their picks and now you are being bumped, so be sure you make your phone call"???

  • At 24 July, 2008 10:41 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

No, it's because am-power dispatcher really screwed up a chase a few days ago and blamed it on not being familiar with the zone it happened on. A chase is a chase no matter what frequency you are on. Guess the cell phone was more important once again! Once again the boss's choose to punish everyone and not just the person who royally fu%^&ed up.

If you think being familiar with all of the zones is some kind of punishment then maybe you are missing the point.

  • At 24 July, 2008 22:28 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

No, you miss my point. Being preoccupied with a cell phone and ignoring their JOB was the problem. None of us should have a problem with any position we work...the problem lies is the lack of work ethics that is running rampant in the OEMC.

  • At 24 July, 2008 23:10 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Your point is well taken but the fact remains, there are too many PCO11's who think they should not work certain zones and too many who like to dispatch based on the (friends) they have made from working the same zone forever. As far as work ethic is concerned, we have to deal with the people they hire, who come to the oemc with no work ethic. If that were part of the requirement for being hired, we would not be having this discussion.

  • At 25 July, 2008 12:00 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

good or bad work ethic in the new hires makes no difference......after being here for more than a few years they all turn bad. you can't keep a good work ethic when most everyone elses is bad and we all get treated the same. what's the point in doing your best when you get treated just as bad as people who don't give a damn about their job.

  • At 25 July, 2008 12:59 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

    dear 25 July, 2008 12:00,

and please enlighten us. exactly how would you treat a person judged to have a good work ethic, differently from someone who has been judged to have a bad work ethic?

now bear in mind, you must identify exactly who in the chain of command will do the judging. and you must create a policy that will stand up to scrutiny by the union and the courts when charges of blatant favoritism are lodged based on sex, race, age and so on, and/or you are sued after the policy is applied where personnel moves are made based on the policy or disciplinary measures are utilized based on the policy.

i await your answer. and, following established policy, is not an answer.

  • At 26 July, 2008 10:18 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

has nothing to do with favoritism....people walk around and do nothing all day and they are the same people most of the time. now everyone from time to time gets a little lazy but when you are doing this for most of your time at 911 why shouldn't they pinpoint the problem people and talk with them. i don't think the people who take thousands of calls everyday should have to hear that people walking around is a problem everyday in roll call. it's negative and if you don't do why should you have to hear about it. it's for the most part the same people who don't do their jobs and have no care about doing them either....and really i don't blame them, you get to do nothing all day and no one does anything about it. why would you do things differently?

The problem is our weak, perverse and perverted police side supervisors that beef on the watch manager when instructed to enforce the rules.

Where do u work? If each call taker took THOUSANDS of calls a day. We wouldn't have a problem. I believe the most I've heard of a call taker taking is 350 or so a day.

  • At 27 July, 2008 03:12 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

350 !!!!! Holy crap! I thought the leading number was 300 in one day, and that is only every now and then. There is no way you can consistently do 300 or 350 calls a day and not get burned out. That is 78,000 to 91,000 calls a year, year in, year out, pass the quiet room, you are on your way to the psych ward or jail in a few years.

    Dear Female Midnight Watch Manager,
I hope you read this blog at work.
How about this? Don't send an ignorant, obnoxious cad msg to the 3rd watch, THE NIGHT BEFORE you plan on mandating people advising us of this probable situation for Saturday night. Why don't you A) Work on Friday night first and once you start doing the sheets for Saturday exhaust ALL people that have signed up to voluntarily come in and B) If you have holes, fill them when you come in. We don't need to be aggravated by you after a long day and have our next work day ruined BEFORE we even get there. You are one of the most unprofessional excuse for management out there.

From the "Chalkie Touring" thread on SCC.

what the fuck is up with the dispatcher on third watch zone 10... someone tell her she's not a sergant, and dont tell me how to code my jobs....we are in a back log everyday, it;s nothing new stop getting all flustered. oh and if you piss you off she will tell you to call the ad desk for an rd#....fuck you....oh and no you cant deny personals, so stop asking sergants if ok to take a personal...dont worry about my status every five minutes, or tell me it shoud take me ____ mins. to handle a job.....fuck you- from third watch zone 10

    8/03/2008 01:17:00 AM

Hey jagoff, that is a Dispatcher doing her job, instead of one that kisses the ass of "friends" on the zone. And no, she isn't a Sergeant of Police, but she is in charge of the zone, whether you like it or not. Fuck you, you whining baby. The Dispatchers and Call Takers get plenty of heat to keep up the pace, and they are tired of getting shit on by the likes of you. Why should they get in trouble for you? You fuckers and your Department throw them under the bus at every opportunity. Fuck you. Get use to doing your job asshole because she is doing hers.

okay, and? So call the ad desk for an rd# asshole. Its zone 10 for crissakes. It and 6 have not had time for bullshit from assholes for a single day in the last 30 years.

If she ain't your girlfriend, sister, mother or daughter, than she owes you nothing more than concern for the safety of you and others. Which includes making sure that she and the zone are not tied up handling little administrative niceties for your convenience.

To the new Dispatcher class. Congrats on the position. Hey let's be encouraging old timers. As with any job you have people who put in an honest days work and others who don't. Unfortunately, seeing the slackers everyday get away with it, will cause you to slack as well. No matter how much you fight it. Just try to do the best you can do. Never forget even though it seems like a call may be stupid or doesn't need police service to you; the person calling doesn't feel that way. BTW, I did notice the new class is mostly black female. AND?!!!! I guess women interview better and tend to stay on jobs longer. Also it appears they are phasing out calltakers. That's fine with me. I will be the last one standing in this B*tch!!!!! I'm not going anywhere. Let's be real, where are any of us going in this economy? Majority of us have been able to put kids through private schools; buy property; and lots of pricey cars. If you work this system right( the mismanagement of this place) you can get alot accomplished. So in conclusion I will say: "I's luvs my guvment job!!!!"

    Question for Dispatchers-

How do you guys put up with slacker partners? Seriously! I've seen so many who feel their job is to answer a cell phone or walk the floor instead of actually being on the zone. I would go postal!!! That's why I never went to the "Dark Side"(no offense).

....I guess women interview better and tend to stay on jobs longer.

FYI..........the city no longer does in peron interviews for this job. They are hired based on their resume. I wonder if the background checks are completed before the city adds their names to the payroll.

Most of you are idiots who obviously don't have lives who spend their time trying to start bad rumors which can easily be proven false. If you dislike your job so much go find another one.

For the Anonymous person whose spreading/attempted to start a rumor about an Alderman's daughter, would be helpful if your dumb ass found out first if the Alderman actually has a daughter. FYI he does not!

Instead of utilizing this blog site to answer questions or support your fellow co-workers you small minded people are on here crying like babies, lying on people, making up the most rediculous things.

I am not sure how you all got hired, by personal interview or not, but let me enlighten your ignorant asses about the current hiring process.

    1. Take the written test!
    2. Take the typing test!
    3. Background Check!
    4. Drug test by hair strand!
    5. Drug test by urine!

Personal interviews obviously did not work! You got through. The new hires resume was not requested until you passed everything else!

Instead of trying to guess what the new hires' personality and work habits are, why don't you all try to figure out how to put in your time, make your earnings, and go the F*$k home and relax, no you spend your work hours on computers typing, then you go home and get on a computer and bitch about it!

    SAD!!!!!

    Re: The speaker of Truth!

I'm so glad you responded. Clearly you see a lot of people on here are in the wrong profession. They are so good with fiction that I wonder why they aren't multi millionaire authors by now.

Ike Carothers doesn't even have a daughter and his one kid (a son) is like a 20 year old college student (in another state). Don't you think if the Chairman of Police and Fire was going to get his kid a job it'd be a little more glamorous, cushy (AND EASIER) than OEMC dispatch? Plus the Shakman people are all over this department. They make you interview with them before you can even get an offer.

How much easier would life be if folks simply did the job they were paid to do? It's pretty simple really: when someone hires you to do a job and says they will pay you, then you have to actually do the job. You don't get to cash the check, skip the work, and then bitch when people hold you accountable. How old are we? This should have been the first lesson your parents taught you.

    paz!

It's not the point that women interview better, it's due to the big AA. Yes folks, it's Affirmative Action. If you're a minority, your score will be higher, sometimes much higher, than your competitors.

How do I know this? It's happened to me. My friend and I tested for a department, the same department, mind you. Now, I've been working in this field for ten plus years, my friend, none. Actually, my friend had no idea as to what this department even did! On the written, we had the exact same answers. I ended up getting a qualified rating, and she, because she was a black woman, scored much higher than I. Why is that??

Now, I know some of you are going to call me a racist because I bring this up, but who's the true ignorant one?

By the way, good luck to all the new dispatchers.

  • At 05 August, 2008 17:38 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

    AA????

Are you kidding me? I don't think you are racist, I think that you simply fail to accept that usually when there is a test involve, for Police, Fire, OEMC, etc. There is usally other obstacles or test you must undergo. This is probably where you failed when competing with your friend for a position.

The fact that you simply think that her race gave her an upper hand simply demonstrates that you think you are smarter than your friend, or that she for some reason is inferior to you, that she only could have surpassed you because of her race.

If you had to take a psychological exam, and you answered a question which reflected that you felt that a person of another race got the job only because of their race, would and should have excluded you from the position.

I'm sure you will deny that you feel that your friend is inferior to you, and the only way she got her job is based on race, but this is the only way you can accept her accomplishment that you were both competing for.

Amazingly, you do not feel that people of other races my be more intelligent, gifted, or talented than you, or is it simply your friend (?) who is not.

Bottom line, the AA comment, exposes your hidden feelings about other races, this is an issue, no matter what others call you, it's what you must accept about yourself.

  • At 05 August, 2008 23:15 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

So there's no such thing as affirmative action? You don't think when they promote supervisors they don't look at how many of each race/sex they already have before they decide who to promote? That's hilarious. Open you eyes.

  • At 06 August, 2008 12:34 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

17:38, you are using your skewed and biased conclusion to support your reasoning, rather than the other way around.

You conclude that the accuser is biased/racist/jealous or whatever, and use this to support an assumption that there must have been other testing not acknowledged in the accuser's post.

The assumption is improper, and the conclusion is not properly supported by reason.

Perhaps the accuser could clarify whether any other testing was possibly involved. Of course, its this murky unobjective testing that is often used to fudge people improperly into positions, so even an acknowledgement of other testing would not necessarily support your conclusion. Nevertheless, an acknowledgement of other testing by the accuser would be the first thing written that would even begin to support your conclusion.

    Logic. Lesson. Over.

So let me get this straight....

Are you all suggesting that the only way the black person could have EVER been selected for the position instead of her obviously no-black friend is simply because Affirmative Action.

To suggest that there could have possibly been other factors in which the 'black' woman could have possibly outscored, interviewed, or tested better on other portions of a possible test is simply a non-consideration, and that the "ONLY" reason she was selected for the position is AA.

So you are saying that in any situation, where a black and white score the same thing on a test, the white "should be selected" or Affirmative action is at play when the black person is selected....

Since you are so quick to shoot down the possibility that other factors or tests were at stake, and I am certain that "NO ONE" in the City of Chicago took a test and got hired based on the score on a test!

This subject was simply brought up to make a point about the new dispatchers, the original statement referring to AA stated that black applicant's tests are given higher scores to make them more compatible.

Your comment suggest that blacks scored lower than the other races, this statement is amazingly racist! Let alone ignorant as hell!

Entitlement rings in the original ignorant post and the additional supporting post attempting to justify or deny that there was additional tests or interviews administered, knowing that the City never gives a test and simply hires from the scores is DENIAL! Full of excuses, and inferior at the least!

Bottom line, which no one wants to address is that AA had to be implemented because the race who determined the racial make-up of the all the City Departments was AA in reverse! Accept it on not!!!
Not because blacks were unable to pass a test, but because of existing relationships and mind-sets of the people making the decision. The playing field is still not level, but laws are in place to make sure that everyone is given a equal chance, without outside influence and pre-determined hiring practices.

Amazing to see how this sick undertone still exist, and the sense of entitlement has many people blinded!

    Ridiculous!

  • At 06 August, 2008 20:11 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Let me sum it up for you by addressing this:

--So you are saying that in any situation, where a black and white score the same thing on a test--

You see, you are again reading facts out of the scenario raised by the original poster. The poster specifically posted that they did not receive the same score, though they had identical answers.

Of course there are other explanations besides racsim for why the scores weren't the same. Perhaps the grader was incompetent, or biased, or otherwise motivated to give different scores. There could be lots of different reasons.

The only one accepted in a significant part of this country by a significant group of people is (drumroll please) affirmative action.

  • At 06 August, 2008 20:27 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ok, now that there's some responses to my statement of AA, it's obvious I need to do some explaining to clear a few things up.

For starters, the written test we took was the very first one, the one that if you pass, you continue on the hiring process. If you fail, it's back to the unemployment office.

Secondly, my friend and I had the discussion on AA, that's why she took the test. It was only to prove a point. We had the EXACT same answers for all the questions.

Now, as many seem to point out that I seem to think that one race is smarter than another, is completely absurd. My point, my ignorant little friends, was that some people who are not qualified get the jobs, when the truly qualified are passed over because of quotas.

I'm not saying that, providing they score the same, the white person gets the job over the black person. What I'm saying is that the most qualified person gets the job, not based on race.

And I'm not suggesting what other people may or may not have scored, as I do not know their scores. I am only saying on what happened to me, with my scores.

Why is it that when a white person mentions anything about race, they're automatically a racist. But when a black person openly makes racist remarks, it's perfectly ok. Where's the equality?

  • At 06 August, 2008 20:29 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I forgot to include this in my point above, but if there is no AA, why is it that when you fill out any forms, they ask for your gender and race??

  • At 07 August, 2008 15:54 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

The fact that there is an inquiry about race can also be seen as utilizing the application to discard the black applicants or to select more white applicants....

Just want to know how do you know that you and your counterpart had the exact same answers????? HMMMM... Let me guess, she copies off your test????

Unless there was only 5 questions, it is almost impossible to know exactly which answers you both gave, unless you actually got your test back after scoring and compared them, and uh.... The city never gives you a graded test or explanation of what you missed or had correct.

Your statement still leaves room for doubt, and shows that your AA statement was/is racist.

  • At 07 August, 2008 18:54 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

15:54, Discard black applicants?? Yeah, that kind of goes against AA. If that were the case, the *ahem* good Rev. Jackson would be all over it.

As for the test, it was a collaborative effort. Frankly, I view your statement that she, a black woman, copied off of me, a white male, quite racist. Your statement tells me that you feel that blacks aren't as smart as whites, because the only way that my friend could score as high as I did would be by copying my test.

My only question is this, 15:54, do you hide your clan robe when people come over? Or do you leave it out for all to see exactly how ignorant you truly are?

If this did happen, wouldn't be the first time pco1's or 2's had this happen to them. Given the right circumstances have seen veterans reduced to tears. At the end of the day were they reduced to tears after properly handling the assignment or did they loose it in the middle? Does make a difference.
