Musical chairs? For or against?

In case you haven't noticed, there has been somewhat of a ops floor shuffle on the 3rd watch. So are you for that or against it? Blogmaster feels every dispatcher should be familiar on all 13 zones. Any other thought?

Familiar on all three zones AND citywides. Some of those citywide dwellers should work a zone every now and again.

That should be all THIRTEEN zones and citywides. OOOOPS

Another issue is all the call takers that think they should have a permanent position/console. Just sit where you are assigned!!

For reasons that I believe are based in common sense, I think the regular "busy zone" dispatchers should be there on Thursday-Saturday nights in the summer, and Friday-Saturday nights during the rest of the year.

Other than that, every other dispatcher in the room should have to sit there the rest of the time, and the busy zone dispatchers can take a break.

Funny how we are all NOW shifting about, after a certain zone regular complained she was being mistreated by the W/M. I'm all for sharing the load, but the move shouldn't have been reactionary due to a complaint being lodged.
Can someone tell me why the POs all get to work the city wides? If they are being paid detective's pay for being a dispatcher, making much more money than we are, then they should be battling it out on the zones as well.

  • At 24 August, 2008 12:59 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

As long as we can understand what the dispatcher is saying, that's all that matters.....

  • At 24 August, 2008 23:20 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

The PO's were battling it out on the zones before the building was ever built and even after it was built. I don't think that,s a road you want to travel.

  • At 24 August, 2008 23:27 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

The shifting was due to a dispatcher screwing up a situation and then using the excuse that they were not familiar with the zone they were working. The dispatcher you made reference to complained after they were shifted.

Keep the regulars on their own zones. They know the area. When you have visitors on, they don't know how far apart some addresses are. We have come clear from one 1a job to be given another 1a job 4 miles away. Its all about the safety of the citizens, right? ( there's one female dispatcher who seems to snicker when she does such) Or as "Kathy" used to say, "Its not your gas, its not your vehicle so just go."

--The PO's were battling it out on the zones before the building was ever built and even after it was built. I don't think that,s a road you want to travel.--

The best ones were, and there were some that were awesome. There were also dozens upon dozens who were as lazy and shiftless as any civilian today.

Some of the best went over from 1121, and those like Stan left as soon as they realized how oppressive the environment is in 1411. Some like Nick stayed.

And others who left and who stayed are as useless today as they were before 1411 opened.

Its a mixed bag, just as much as with the civilians.

The attack shouldn't be on POs on citywides, the attack should be on clueless hacks of any title who whouldn't be in the building.

  • At 25 August, 2008 23:52 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey 09:32, the shift only involves one dispatcher from the zone, so there is at least one regular on the zone at all times just for the reason you mentioned. If all three are working then you have two regulars on the zone. Once again, having partial information results in wrong conclusions.

For. The issue is not about the ability of the dispatchers to work everywhere. They should have that skill. The real issue is is how the WM defines the goal and informs the watch of the execution strategy.
This is a problem that keeps coming up when any WM tries to implement this type of cross-zone training. They have no set goals or training plans so it can appear to be arbitrary or retaliatory when a "zone regular" is moved. It looks like they are imposing change for the sake of change rather than leading the watch to a new level of increased skills. They need to take on a leadership role rather than a do as I say because I say so role.

  • At 26 August, 2008 23:37 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

And just what WM are you talking about? You say dispatchers should be able to work anywhere but a lot of them don't. Even some of the regulars can't or are afraid to work zones other than the ones they are assigned. Moving them one day a week will give them some experience on the other zones, hence the goal and training plan that you speak of.

well im a regular on a busy zone and i like being there. but im not gonna complain if they move me around once in a while either. i feel i can get the job done anywhere. i mostly like being assigned to my regular zone because i know how to work with my partners. if we could move regulars around once a week and move them as a group ie. reg's on zone 10 now working zone 8 for one week. that would be pretty nice. because you know how to work with those people and do it well. and not knowing the area is no excuse for sending someone way out....we do have maps and cross streets that tell us exactly what hundred a street is and most normal people can figure out how far things are. you mostly get 1a jobs across the district because we have no one else and that's how we are supposed to dispatch....priorities first to whoever is clear first. sorry, but i think your dispatcher is just doing his/her job.

  • At 27 August, 2008 14:24 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

--reg's on zone 10 now working zone 8 for one week--

8:49 I agree with your sentiment about getting moved with your partners, particularly as sometimes the only reason some people are "willing" to endure a busy zone regularly is because its the only way a w/m will agree to put them with the regular partners they want.

However, zone 8 as a break from zone 10 for a week?

    Come on!

How 'bout zone 1 as a break from zone 10 for a week. Or zone 2, zone 3, zone 4, zone 7 (er, maybe not), zone 11, or zone 13? Or better yet, how about you get moved to the citywides as a group for the week?

If you are to get a break, let's please try and make sure you are actually getting a break!

  • At 27 August, 2008 22:58 , Anonymous Anonymous said...

People are really making too much of this. It's about time that people realize they don't own a zone or a seat or anything like it..answer when your name is called, go upstairs without bitching in the elevator , sit down and work..it's only one day for crying out loud!

i never said it was a break i was just using the 2 zones as an example. like i said im a regular on a busy zone and i could care less if i got a "break" or not. as long as i can work with my partners that im used to and i know i work well with, you can sit me anywhere you want. that was my point ....... not to give someone a break.

Get to work ! You are getting paid to serve us citizens of Chicago. Lazy F__ks !

9:56, its me calling for a break for you. You deserve it.

I worked em for years before leaving, and you are the salt of the earth worker. You deserve a break, even if you are not calling for one.

That's all I'm saying. Not trying to be patronizing. Just recognizing that you and your partners are the workers of the room, and you deserve a break.

there are a some lazy call takers/dispatchers and there are a some lazy coppers out there too. but no ones as lazy as the citizens out there calling for help with their 5 yo child who won't listen. or the calls we get when there is a toy laying in the street and they want police to come get it out. or maybe when your nabors sprinkler water is hitting your porch and you call for police to come and tell them to move it. lazy asses?! the calls we get up there are proof that chicago citizens are lazy so you shut the f#$% up and maybe raise your own damn kids or walk over and check on your own family member when you can't get in touch with them, or maybe talk to your nabor about his sprinkler and stop asking for the police to get involved in something that they have no control over.

love your friendly lazy dispatcher/call taker who you call when you need something.

Hey Asswipe, don't be so fast to judge. That is one of the abbreviations we use to save valuable time when typing the event as the caller is talking. Using abbreviations, we can faster complete the event narrative and electronically get it to the dispatcher as fast as possible, so the dispatcher can receive it and send resources as fast as possible. So there you go Quick Draw!

Are you saying that as a citizen of Chicago your taxes pay the salaries of city workers? OEMC employees have to live in the city as well, so they pay their own salaries.

    Dear Asswipe 30 August 2008 15:51,

On this blog and SCC, over the last few months, you have asked this same question multiple times in the same insulting manner, and you have been given the same answer, however it is apparent that you are not interested in an answer. We get your point. You are hardly concerned about her welfare or if good things have happened for her. Your goal is to insult her because you do not like her or you are mad at her or she shut you down, but move on idiot and get over it.

However, if you are so interested in her, why don't you leave your e-mail address or phone number and I am sure someone will pass your message along. Otherwise, just slither back into your viper den and stay off the blog. Goof.

    To 31 Aug 08 12:01:

I just wanted to say thank you, whoever you are, for sticking up for me. Someone told me about rosco's entry on this post and a previous post last year. I don't write stuff in these blogs because I don't want to give anyone the satisfaction of acknowledging their hateful comments. While yes, I was a difficult dispatcher on zone 12(I know that's putting it mildly, especially to my poor partners that had to hear me rant on a daily basis) I tried never to do anything maliciously to the officers on the street. As for your comment on having rosco passing on his/her email address or phone number, that's not necessary, I'm not sure if rosco is someone I would care to speak to about anything. I just wanted to send my appreciation to you for saying the kind words, it's rare anyone sticks up for me, so thanks much for saying what you did. I'm amazed anyone even remembers me, it's been almost 3 years since I've been on the floor, and yet someone has the time to go on this blog and call me a psycho on this post and on a previous post last year. Anyway, I'd forgotten that some people could be kind (31 Aug 08 12:01) so yet again, thank you! I really appreciate it.

JODY meets with Supervisors/Minutes of the Meeting

One of our own has left a brief synopsis of the town hall meeting with the superintendent. The supervisor also was good enough to give his/her opinions of the points brought up at the meeting. I am certain that others will vehemently disagree with this commenter but please be respectful enough that I can publish your rebuttals.

    Notes from the supervisors meeting:

    Estimated attendance: less than 50

The black Tahoe is the preferred choice. Graphics will probably be the traditional one.

New recruits to be trained with Glocks only.

Brust(sp) is only person allowed to strip an officer. J Fed showed common sense in why decision was made.

J Fed wants to completely revamp the promotional exams and merit process. He believes there is no reason one should not have a score when leaving the exam site and know their rank at the end of the day when all exams are finished. He strongly believes in merit but it should be because of what you do, not who you know. He would like to have officers nominate themselves for merit and have to complete a lengthy package detailing their accomplishments and qualifications. Have the process more transparent, possible with union reps at the selection process as observers.

20 new Lts this year....6 merit.

The reason that patrol is under represented in merit promotions is because exempts are NOT nominating officers from patrol. (shocking!)

Manditory fitness testing as a condition of employment or for promotion is NOT true. The reason for it as a requirement for the carbine is that if you are carrying one, and have to run, you shouldn't be huffing and puffing when trying to aim the weapon, thereby throwing off sights--dangerous situation with that type of weapon.

600 wehicle locks for carbines coming.

Performance reviews coming January 2009. He believes there are way too many CRs obtained for things that are performance issues or simple mistakes. There are better ways to handle those issues: training, notation in file which will afffect performance grade, etc.

Explained, at length, the Cozzi incident. Said that he explained it the same way at other meetings with officers. He only asked the US attorney to look at the video of the incident. It was a decision he made at the time and stands behind that decision.
MY OPINION: Believes he was right in his decision to make the call. But in retrospect, may not have made the same call in light of the fallout. I could be wrong, that's just my impression.

They are actively looking for a very strong case to charge somone with perjury in making false allegation and signing the affidavit. Mayor is on board.

He will back anyone that acts as a reasonable person. That action may not the right, but if actions are reasonable, ok. Example: If attacked, spit on, etc and bad guy gets an extra crack or so, wrong, but not unreasonable under the circumstances. Incident will he handled accordingly.

He would like to eliminate TRU and the DOC. Decentralize control. Let the Commanders decide where their problems are how how to address them.

New computers coming. He can buy 3 motorolas for the price of 2 toughbooks. OEMC has the motorola but is sitting on their ass and not making a decision if they will work. All he asks of them is to make a decision.

GPS coming to all cars. Command staff included. Command staff and dangerous districts to get the first. Installation to be started very soon. This is an officer safety issue.

He's not a fan of the inspectors as they now. They should be focusing on larger issues, not petty stuff.

He is amazed at the length of time it takes to institue any change in this department.

He never expected that when he made a command change, that person will take all his/her people with them to the new unit/district. This totally disrupts everything. The boss in the new spot should not make personell changes immediately but have those that now work for him prove that they can do the job. This will not be allowed to happen in the future...Question not asked--But that's what he did!

As a PO who has posted previously here, and acknowledges the difficult job for dispatchers I'd like to offer a few comments.

#1 - Musical Chairs. NOOOOO!!!! Our regular dispatchers know the areas, and know our voices - which is HUGE when the shit hits the fan. Assigned Zones I imagine is much like an assigned beat car. I know the in's & out's of my beat. I know which streets go through, which direction each one way goes & shortcuts I can take.

I understand there are incompetant dispatchers (our Zone is often used to 'punish' them). But - putting them on a busy Zone is downright dangerous!

#2 - can SOMEONE there PLEASE talk to the calltakers & get usable information? The guy pissing on the side of his car we get everything, full description, license plate - hell, bet they have some that describe how much lint he has in his belly button. Man w/a gun call? A vague description at best.

#3 - As I was told, some dispatchers intentionally keep their volume down. Nastiness soley for the sake of being nasty. Turn up your volume, please! These new radios we have SUCK - we have to crank up to hear, then a car keys up and all our eardrums are bleeding!

#4 - Is there a reason not to have early & late starts for the Zones? Often, especially in the summer - we're left with 'stand by' while the new crew plugs in. The new crew often sits down to a shitstorm and no idea whats going on. Having an hour overlap would prevent alot of craziness at change times (and alot fewer temper tantrums - by the dispatchers and the PO's.

*PS... Hi AMY!!!! I remember you well & maybe you had some issues with people, but when the shit hit the fan you and MD were always ON. Screw the Roscoes and the like. They were just jealous you never gave them the time of day! ;)

I could care less how they LOOK, just speak clearly please!!

Often I think you guys forget you are our lifeline out there. I've personally had mine saved over the years by some EXCELLENT dispatchers.

Please speak clearly, turn your volume up, don't ingest the mic... Alot of repeating could be eliminated by doing these things. The radios we have are horrible. Every little thing that can be done helps.

Oh, and please don't hog the air. We know you have jobs to get out, but take your foot off the pedal so others can get on.

    Thanks.
